Landscape Problems

When non-indigenous and invasive plants escape, they become biological invaders, and can wreak havoc on the landscape. Our tropical environment encourages plants to grow quickly spread &disperse into new areas. As a result, our natural areas suffer from encroaching invasive plants that not only drive out native plants and animals

Asparagus fern is a nasty poisonous (red berry) plant which may start off as a harmless potted plant, is not a fern at all, but a member of the lily family.

Once in a plant bed it becomes a  weed which can get established in shrub beds than take over, choking the good plant out of existence. A very hard to remove plant which produces a berry which plants itself in the ground with a hard nut core that must be dug out to remove.

Invasive Trees: which should NOT be grown in Florida as the take over areas & push out natural vegetation and removed when found.

Melaleuca is on Florida's official list of noxious plants, and its cultivation and possession are prohibited by state law.

Besides displacing native plants and animals, non-indigenous and invasive plants like these Australian Pines consistently fall into drainage canals and block water flow.  When this happens, flooding is likely to be worse, and more longlasting.  Because these shallow-roots trees are not native to the region, they are unable to withstand many of south Florida’s frequent storm events.
